Happy St. Patrick’s Day!

It was an honor to meet the Irish Consul General to the Midwest, Kevin Byrne, as he spoke before the House of Representatives today about the strong relationship and shared goals of the United States, Illinois and Ireland. Sláinte and Happy St. Patrick’s Day!

Standing up for child victims of exploitation.

The unanimous passage of House Bill 4593 says to victims in a unified voice that we see you, we hear you and we will not let your abusers off the hook for their depraved actions. Under the legislation, those who pay for sex would no longer be able to claim they did not know the person they solicited for sex was underage or was a person with an intellectual disability and use it as an affirmative defense. This change in the law would place the burden on the exploiter who solicited the sex to prove they did not know their victim was underage or disabled, rather than placing the burden on the victim.  Read More Here.

Former House Speaker Mike Madigan indicted on federal corruption charges.

The indictment of Mike Madigan has been a long time coming. Never should someone so obviously engaged in public corruption have been able to stay in office for so long and abuse the taxpayers of our state for personal gain. For those who are now standing up saying, “We knew something was wrong” or “We called on Madigan to step down,” yet continued to accept his financial support – the lip service is meaningless. If they do not stand with us now to pass long-overdue ethics reform that substantially changes how state government operates, they have no business continuing in public office.  Read More Here.

Designation of Rt. 137 in memory of SPC Wesley Wells completed.

SPC Wells felt the call to service after the 9/11 terror attacks. He subsequently joined the United States Army to make a career out of protecting his country. He paid the ultimate sacrifice in service to our nation in 2004 while fighting insurgents in eastern Afghanistan. While designating a portion of Route 137 in his memory is a small act, by comparison, it is the least we can do to honor his sacrifice.  Read More Here.
